Stars on the Australian Flag

I'm sure I'm not the only person who gets nervous when asked about the flags of Australia and/or New Zealand. They're so similar; how can you distinguish between them?!

I'm documenting this here as much in an attempt to cement it in my own mind as to teach anyone else to suck eggs.

It's easiest to start with the New Zealand flag: this has four stars in the Southern Cross, and that's it.

The flag of Australia has an extra star in the Southern Cross, and it also has the Commonwealth Star. The latter represents the Commonwealth of Australia, which was formed by an event that Wikipedia refers to as the Federation of Australia. This took place in 1901.

The flag of New Zealand is complicated in a different way, namely that the four stars are red with white borders. All six stars on the Australian flag are just white.
